The Graduate Writing Assistant (GWA) is a phenomenal resource offered to graduate students. The goal of the GWA is to assist students with academic writing needs that include their theses, capstone projects, dissertations and general research papers or portfolios. Academic writing can appear intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. The GWA approaches academic writing as a “Writing Mechanic” to help get the writing process moving or to assist in the event of a stall or complete stop.

Writing assistance includes but is not limited to aiding with conceptualizing thoughts, helping with various citation styles (the importance of avoiding plagiarism is stressed throughout this section), developing proficiencies in paraphrasing, techniques for efficient revisions, encouragement in developing and maintaining “writing flow”, and connecting students with resources to further help their writing needs. Periodically, group workshops will be offered. Smaller group workshops will be of assistance for difficulties such as demystifying the writing process or effective paraphrasing. Slightly larger group workshops will be held to address research ideologies and techniques with experts in their chosen field and hands on partnering with graduate peers for brainstorming and feedback. Further topical workshops will be offered as permitted and suggested.

Overall, the writing assistance provided is an interdisciplinary service that covers all graduate programs offered in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (School 56) at Rutgers–Camden. The Graduate Writing Assistant is available by appointment for Rutgers University–Camden graduate students during the academic year.
